Peter Jensen Ltd.

Since the onset of the Noughties, Peter Jensen has carved out a reputation as a designer whose impeccably produced creations thread together mischievous humour and a celebratory approach to individuality, with an impressive attention to detail and lightness of touch. This approach is clearly apparent within his designs for both men and women - the results of which always deftly remain on the wearable side of unconventional.

Based in London, though originally hailing from Logstor, Denmark, Jensen initially launched his eponymous menswear line immediately after graduating - with a Distinction - from Central Saint Martins, in 1999. This, along with his prior training in the various disciplines of graphic design, embroidery and tailoring, has consistently enabled his work to be as technically adept as it is inspired and original.

Following his menswear debut on the Paris official show schedule, back in 2000, Jensen duly unveiled a womenswear line, too, and both collections have since been shown to much acclaim each season at London Fashion Week. Jensen has subsequently garnered an ever-growing fan base for his designs, with global stockists which now cater to his enthusiastic clients including stores such as Opening Ceremony in New York, b store and Dover Street Market in London, Side by Side in Tokyo, and UK Style in Moscow to name just a few. High profile devotees of his aesthetic now include pop sensations Amy Winehouse, Rhianna, Nina Persson from The Cardigans, The Zutons' Abi Harding, Joanna Newsom and Martha Wainwright , not to mention famous actresses including Rachel Bilson, Lindsay Lohan, Dakota Fanning and Maggie Gyllenhaal. (Incidentally, legendary film maker John Waters has also declared his admiration for Jensen's work, in the past and pieces from his SS08 collection "Mink" are now included in the John Waters Archive at Wesleyan University).

Further broadening his appeal, Jensen has regularly embarked on an array of carefully chosen collaborative projects, with a variety of iconic or cult international retailers and brands. These projects have led to him fashioning a succession of specially designed capsule ranges for Topshop, Topman, Fred Perry, Ebonyivory, Weekday, Fable, Buddahood and the award-winning b Store. For Spring/Summer 2009, Jensen notably unveiled a capsule women's range exclusively for London's Dover Street Market, which utilised archive prints originally produced for the designer by Shona Heath. The success of this venture was continued for Autumn/Winter 2009/10, with another exciting collaboration. This combined a site-specific installation, conceived by photographer Tim Walker, that played host to a capsule women's collection - featuring prints inspired by images in Walker's remarkable book, Tim Walker Pictures.

Jensen also introduced his debut Resort collection, sold in select stockists from November 2009. Spring/Summer 2010, meanwhile, saw an affordable range of men's and women's capsule collections being unleashed in collaboration with Scandinavian brand, Weekday, of Cheap Monday renown. Jensen's eponymous Spring/Summer 2010 'Laurie' collection - resulting from his collaboration with US artist Laurie Simmons - garnered hugely favourable reviews, propelling him to become the recipient of a £100,000 award from the Danish Arts Council in late 2009: he is the first fashion designer to ever win this award, as it is usually bestowed upon fine artists. He has also recently been nominated for the 2010 Scottish Fashion Awards. The designer's Autumn/Winter 2010-11 collection was presented successfully at his keenly anticipated New York Fashion Week debut, which was sponsored by Mac and featured a soundtrack of melancholy songs crooned by the inimiatble Nina Persson. Jensen's Spring/Summer collection for 2011 will also be shown in New York later this year.

While Jensen's collections are wide reaching, in terms of their sources of inspiration, it is evident that each of his designs - for men or women - proudly asserts itself as a stand-alone piece, even when divorced from the context of the collection in its entirety. Regarding the womenswear, specifically, what unifies these pieces, to some extent, is that each collection arrives with a moniker that references a famous or infamous woman whose style, spirit and attitude - however wayward, wonderful or weird - particularly appeals to the designer. Hence, in previous seasons, Jensen's 'muses' have wildly ranged from the bird-like Sissy Spacek, or identity-teasing New York artist Cindy Sherman, to the magisterial Helena Rubinstein, or thoroughly disgraced Olympic ice-skater Tonya Harding (the latter even inspiring Jensen to present the collection at an ice rink, as a tongue in cheek tribute to her notorious antics).

Such an individual, independent approach to fashion has resulted in Jensen being one of the most keenly anticipated, contemporary designers showing on today's catwalks. His is a spirit which manages, seemingly effortlessly, to be simultaneously modern and timeless, and fun yet rather clever, too.
