When Hamish Bowles came to Copenhagen Fashion Week

When Hamish Bowles came to Copenhagen Fashion Week

Hamish Bowles' cultural exploration began at Christian Frederik Hansen's Church of Our Lady, which he described as "a place to make the heart soar". Next stop was the oldest museum in Danmark, Thorvaldsens Museum, which was build to celebrate one of the most famous Danish artists, Bertel Thorvaldsen. Hamish Bowles referred to the museum as one of the most enchanting in the world. The first fashion show in Bowles schedule was the debutant Anne Sofie Madsen, who impressed the European editor at Large for Vogue, with her samurai warrior inspired collection. During his stay, he had the pleasure of attending the shows of Stine Goya, Soulland, By Malene Birger, Munthe plus Simonsen, Veronica B. Vallenes, Designers Remix, Astrid Andersen and last but not least Henrik Vibskov.
To get a better insight in danish design through the ages, Hamish Bowles visited the Georg Jensen workshop and archives where all the objects designed by the company since 1904 are at display. He also visited the Danish Museum of Art & Design where Peter Jensen held an exhibition about the muses that have inspired all of his collections, among them the Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut and the '30s Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie.
He spent his last evening in Copenhagen in the company of the Danish supermodel Helena Christensen, who invited him to Freetown Christiania for dinner. Unfortunately the chefs of the restaurant were too stoned to cook so Helena and Hamish had to share the one course that made it out of the kitchen. According to Hamish Bowles it was the perfect Christiania experience.

Danish Fashion Dynamics

Danish Fashion Dynamics

Words by Didder Rønlund

The energy sparkled and dynamics took center stage during Copenhagen Fashion Week's SS 2012 season. The latter by one of Danish fashion's great players. Niels Mikkelsen, the CEO of IC Companys, participated in the week's activities with no red ink in sight, having had a turnover in 2010 of DKK 3 billion and profits of 280 million, figures projected to rise to DKK 3,9 billion this year in turnover and 320 million in earnings.

Not a word about crisis from this writer. Instead I'd like to offer loads of flowers to Uffe Buchard and Kim Grenaa, show architects with their leading peers abroad, staged the happiest CPH Vision show to date in Amaliehaven. But just to stay with the IC Companys family's good news, InWear-designer Lene Borgaard was awarded Guldknappen 2011. Lene received the button from the weekly magazine ALT for Damerne. Charlotte Lynggaard had designed it in pure gold, and both of these fashion events were topped only by Malene Birger's, which boasted more than a thousand celebs in Carlsberg's bottling halls. And yet again I return to our dynamic fashion family, for Messrs Niels Martinsen, who founded InWear in 1961 and later IC Companys, in which he still still serves as chairman of the board, and the aforementioned Niels chose to purchase By Malene Birger last year, thereby acquiring a large chunk of Danish fashion's wingspan in a nutshell. Way to go.

At City Hall, the Danish postal service Post Danmark introduced the first fashion stamps in history in a collaboration with Malene Birger and Soulland's Silas Adler. With more than 60,000 designers, buyers, fashion fans and press both international and local, City Hall served, as in years past, as a hospitable center and a broad forum, which mayor Pia Allerslev addressed.

"There is something almost devout about the stamp as a platform, as opposed to the emails sent these days. Almost like the motifs on currency bills. They also represent value in the same way," said the mayor, who together with her new mayor colleague Ayfer Baykal, who is equally interested in fashion, participated in as many shows as they could.

Ole Yde's idea of moving his classic, elegant collection with eye catching Georg Jensen jewellery in between classic, Danish furniture design in Bredgade was well-conceived, and 250 guests participated in the presentation. The showing proved that Yde is capable of sewing wedding dress dreams for DKK 130,000, construct sleeves and shoulders and ruffles with processing so fine it cannot be copied - one of the reasons why Crown Princess Mary pays him so much attention.

While Copenhagen Fashion Festival lived up to its reputation with an especially joyous and lively energy both indoors and out on the Copenhagen streets, on the big screens with their live projections of the runways, in the late-night champagne served in stores, and in street parties, rock and jazz, Peter Jensen flew in from London. Until October 31, he is exhibiting at Designmusem Danmark, and gave a presentation on his fashion designs and the muses that have inspired him - from aunt Jytte to Tonya Harding.

The most spectacular show of the many late nights saw the excitement over Henrik Vibskov shoot sky high over the grass outside Forum. A review follows, but shouldn't overshadow the fact that Henrik's richness of ideas and formidable talent have earned him the world's biggest design award, with a prize of a million Swedish kroner -the Torsten & Wanja Söderberg Prize, which is usually awarded to craftsmen and graphic design companies. Respect.

Perhaps it wasn't so surprising that it was the two outstanding designers Malene Birger and Henrik Vibskov that set Danish fashion's milestones, but it was worth gold for an industry facing a global economic storm.

See you again in February for another happy fashion week in wonderful Copenhagen.

FASHION WEEK BEGINS WITH A FAIRYTALE

FASHION WEEK BEGINS WITH A FAIRYTALE

Words by Didder Rønlund

Copenhagen Fashion Week A/W2011 started off with a blast of a gala show at Ecco's award dinner at Copenhagen City Hall.

CEO Dieter Casprzak, the son-in-law of Karl Toosbuy, the man who began this Danish shoe fairy tale, the third-largest in the world today, has preserved his family dynasty's respect for social responsibility and Walk Easy design. And who doesn't own a pair of Ecco's? They can be purchased in 900 stores worldwide, with 28 in China, which includes 11 of the Tønder shoemaker's shopping paradises aptly situated in Hong Kong!

Beauty guru Ole Henriksen flew in from L.A. to assume the podium as show master, and "he loved it, he loved it, he loved it" - and sure did he have reason to love, with the event standing out as that fashion day's finest.

Kim Grenaa's direction with Femmes Regionales, Mikkel Kure and Simon Rasmussen's oversized body hiders - seen as bombs of humor with an artsy edge - allowed gorgeous girl legs to steal the runway in shoes and fur-lined boots. Show piece stilettos from Southern Jutland with black rooster feather ankle straps got the fashionistas out of their seats - and don't worry, stilettos will be found in shelves again this autumn, though unfortunately without feathers. The award's prize money of DKK 250,000 went to the lovely Renee Toft Simonsen, super model and author, who immediately donated the sum to the cause of educating African women.

Looking back, I haven't ever seen a nicer presentation of shoes in New York, London, or Paris. And speaking of City Hall, the fashion days left their mark on locations ranging from the four fair halls over the Central Station to Carlsberg and Hotel d'Angleterre, where designer collections were viewed eagerly by politicians, buyers, international press, and celebrities. I had the pleasure of meeting Brian Mikkelsen, Denmark's Minister of Economic and Business Affairs, with his wife Eliane, who also took the opportunity to drop by along with her daughter. I was also pleased to meet Copenhagen's Lord Mayor, Frank Jensen, and its Mayor for Culture, Pia Allerslev, and many others whose interest gave the fashion people sincere pats on the shoulder.

The serial drama about fashion models' Body Mass Index led to some bumps in the road, as it has ever since England's Twiggy appeared on the podium at age 14 at Yves Saint Laurent's couture debut in Rue Spontini in Paris: Flat as an ironing board, she had young girls from many different countries half-starve to death as far back as the 60s. I recollect no attacks at Yves Saint Laurent, but also, I must ask today - where are the parents? Those girls are just so young.

The cheers, on the other hand, were loud, when news concerning Denmark's struggling export figures came out that the aggregate sales of Danish products and services to other countries has taken a giant 19.7 % leap since the crisis year of 2009. That has happened while the world economy has made a considerable comeback, making for a surprisingly positive 2010. Danish exports, with the fashion industry as the number four sector, has reached a per capita average of DKK 175,000 (source: Statistics Denmark). Probably the highest in the world, out-exporting Sweden's per capita average of DKK 168,000.

See you again in August for a happy new fashion week in wonderful Copenhagen!
