Over the coming week two books will be out, both revolving around fashion and with a Danish touch.
One of them is Fashion Scandinavia, written by Danish fashion stylist and writer Dorothea Gundtoft. In Fashion Scandinavia Gundtoft explores how Scandinavian designers have gone onto the world stage with their love for minimalism, details, quality, and sustainability.
It is a feature of more than 50 notable fashion designers from the Nordic countries. Whether they are well-established or up-and-coming, they all have a passion committed to a cool and refined design style that has a massive international appeal.
In it the reader gets an insight into brands like COS, Acne, DAY Birger et Mikkelsen, Marimekko, WOOD WOOD and upcoming designers like Ann-Sofie Back and Louise Sigvardt.
The other new publication about fashion is Dansk på mode!, written by the Danish Research Fellow at Designmuseum Danmark, Marie Riegles Melchior, who has a Master in European Ethnology and a PhD in Danish fashion history. In it Melchior focuses on the phenomenon Danish Fashion, its different meanings and how it was created.
Dansk på mode! is a book about clothes, fashion design, identity and history, and is illustrated with more than one hundred pictures, among them numerous rare photograps from Danish designers' scrapbooks. It is based on and around the Danish fashion industry from the context of 20th century to contemporary Danish history.
The book is based on a historical analysis of Danish fashion history starting in the 1950’s. Its main case is the Danish designer Mads Nørgaard – Copenhagen where Danish fashion has been created for years.
Both books are either out now or just around the corner, a perfect read in between shows or on your travels to Copenhagen.
Fashion Scandinavia is published on the 11th of February 2013 on Thames & Hudson
Dansk på Mode! was published on the 25th of January 2013 on Museum Tusculanum Press
